To facilitate spaces for community-building and explore the role of spiritual practices in our movement for justice, we hosted the first of what will be monthly Havdalah gatherings. Havdalah is a ceremony that takes place on Saturday evenings to mark the end of Shabbat and the beginning of the week.
JVP DC partnered with Voices from the Holy Land to present a free film screening and discussion of The Occupation of the American Mind, which explores how the Israeli government, the U.S. government, and the pro-Israel lobby have joined forces, often with very different motives, to shape American media coverage of the conflict in Israel's favor. Photographer Anne Paq & journalist Ala Qandil joined us for a screening and discussion of their incredible multimedia project and film, Obliterated Families, which details the lives of dozens of Palestinians in Gaza who lost their families during Operation Protective Edge, the 2014 Israeli offensive in Gaza. More than one dozen of our local chapter members joined with over 1,000 JVP members from across the country in Chicago between March 31–April 2 for the Jewish Voice for Peace National Member Meeting, the biannual opportunity to meet JVP members, partners, and leaders in the Palestine solidarity movement from around the world for in depth conversations to build community, deepen our political analysis, and grow our organizing skills.
